Justin and Ryan first met in the experimental music scene of early 2010s Los Angeles. They shared bills and collaborated occasionally until, in 2012, they both left for other ventures. Justin practiced visual art in New York City, and Ryan trained as an evolutionary biologist in Northern California. They didn’t talk for six years. In 2018, they unexpectedly reconnected at the former NOH/WAVE gallery space in downtown Los Angeles. Nalle Mishima is the result of this reunion.

A series of recording sessions occurred over 2018-2019 (see Appendix A for details) involving collaborators Dave Elitch (drums), Yvette Holzwarth (violin), Max Kaplan (baritone saxophone), Amirtha Kidambi (voice), and Jared Rodriguez (modular synthesizer, engineering). These improvisations formed a kind of sound library. Productions made from the library formed the basis of collaborations with the singer Adam Oliveri and the dancer Rubberlegz and of scores for films by Justin and Linda Mai Green. “Nalle Mishima” is the first full-length LP made from this material.
